Software I use, and other things I recommend.

I get asked a lot about the things I use to build software, stay productive, or buy to fool myself into thinking I’m being productive when I’m really just procrastinating. Here’s a big list of all of my favorite stuff.

Workstation

  • 14” MacBook Pro, M1, 16GB RAM (2021)

I was using an Intel-based 16” MacBook Pro prior to this. It's faster, lighter, and has a better battery life. I'm not sure what else I could ask for.

  • Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor | U3421WE

Widescreen, charges my laptop and has a bunch of ports.

  • Apple Magic Keyboard

I'm not fussy about keyboards, but I do like the feel of this one.

  • Apple Magic Trackpad

    Game changer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - I don't know how I ever used a mouse.

  • Apple AirPods Pro

Use them every day, coding, listening to music, and even for exercise.

Development tools

  • Visual Studio Code

Productivity is the name of the game here. I use a lot of extensions, but the ones I use the most are:

    • Copilot

  • iTerm2

I’m honestly not even sure what features I get with this that aren’t just part of the macOS Terminal but it’s what I use.

  • Homebrew

I use this to install a lot of the tools I use on the command line.

Design

  • Figma

Can't decide between Figma and Sketch. I use both, but I think Figma is a little more fun.

Productivity

  • OneMenu

OneMenu is a menubar app featuring system monitoring, a window manager and a keyboard cleaning mode.

  • Notion

I use Notion for everything. I have a personal wiki, a todo list, a calendar, a journal, and a bunch of other stuff. I’m not sure what I’d do without it.

  • Dash

I use Dash for documentation. I have a lot of stuff installed, but I use it the most for React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS.
